Lvov
Lviv is famous for its long history. Year of foundation of this beautiful Ukrainian city is 1259. Lviv was first mentioned in the Galicia-Volyn chronicle this year. The founder of the city is the famous Prince Danilo Romanovich, who named the city after his son Lev. The city has a unique geographical position; it became the main trade center of Eastern Europe and the largest city of Ukraine in the 15-17-X centuries due to its location.
Lviv has quickly become a real gem of architecture, handicrafts and art. In the 18th-20th centuries the city has made a great contribution to technological innovations. A gas lamp was invented in Lviv. In 1939-1991 the city was completely subservient to the totalitarian regime of the Soviet Union. But Lviv became the cultural and spiritual capital of the State after proclaiming of independence of Ukraine. In 1998 the city was included in the UNESCO list of world monuments.
Nowadays the population of Lviv is over 830,000 people. 160,000 of them are students.
There are more than 50% of all cultural monuments of Ukraine and half a million museum artifacts in Lviv. As well as more than a ten honorary consulates of foreign countries and more than sixty universities.
Lviv has the interesting historical facts: first Ukrainian park was established there; Ukraine's first book was published in Lviv; the first post is based in Ukraine, the first brewery, university, newspaper, city theater was founded in Lviv.
The most famous sights are the Opera House, the famous Potocki Palace, Dominican Cathedral, Shevchenko's Paradise, and so on.
Lviv is considered the pearl of architecture, city of culture, where tradition and national customs reigns. Also the city has a huge success among the tourists who do not deprive themselves of the opportunity to walk through the narrow streets of the ancient city, to walk around the area of the market, to feel the unique spirit of history, to sit in a cafe with a cup of famous Lviv coffee and go to the pub, drink a glass of beer and see the ancient city from the mountain "High Castle".
In 2006 the city celebrated its 750th anniversary.
