Lutsk
The exact time of Lutsk foundation is unknown, but official mention of the city dates back to 1085. It is considered that the area of Lutsk has been inhabited by Kriviches, Yatvingians, Dulebas and other eastern tribes in the 7th century
In 1001 the first wooden fortress of Lutsk was built on a hill near the city, it has withstood many sieges. In the 14th century a stone castle was built on the site of the fortress. This castle you can find nowadays. This is one of the most important sights of Ukraine.
Later the city became a major trading center and the successful location contributed this. The merchants from different countries gathered in Lutsk.
It's not a secret that many of dukes has repeatedly tried to capture the rich and well-fortified city. But the castle could not conquer anyone ever.
Perhaps such frequent historical changes have played a role in the cultural development of the city. In 1985 Lutsk received the status of Historical and Cultural reserve called "Old Lutsk"
The constant opposition of the Orthodox and the Catholic culture has played a major role in the spiritual development of the city. There are several large monasteries in Lutsk such as the Dominican Convent, the great kirche, brigidok and shiritok, Holy Pokrovskaya Church, Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church and many other spiritual and cultural facilities.
